Celebrating Newly Elected Women!

Happy Friday!

It has been an exciting ELECTION week for women all across the country. On behalf of the Drake Institute of Research and Policy, I would like to thank all of the women who made the bold decision to run for elected office to help make a meaningful difference in their communities. I’d also like to congratulate those who ran their campaigns and were victorious in their pursuits. Because of all of you, we are many steps closer to achieving true equality for women in education, business, health, housing, careers, finance, and every other major function of society.

Our team is working on a complete list of newly elected women legislators to share with everyone, but in the interim I would like to highlight a few special wins.

Paige Cognetti made history as the first woman to be elected mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania in a crowded special election. In Mount  Vernon, New York, Shawyn Patterson-Howard became the first woman to be elected mayor. Ghazala Hashmi became the first Muslim woman and Indian American woman elected to Virginia’s State Senate. Regina Romero was the first woman and first Latina to become mayor of Tucson. Safiya Khalid was the first Somali American and youngest person elected to Lewiston City Council in Maine. Nadia Mohamed  was the first Muslim woman and first Somali American on the St. Louis Park City Council in Minnesota. Lastly, Donyel Barber was the first Black woman on Gastonia City Council in North Carolina.

We could not be more excited about these newly elected legislators and look forward to partnering with their offices in the upcoming year by providing high quality policy analyses and critiques. Together, we will help improve outcomes for women in the areas of healthcare, criminal justice reform, the environment, gender equality in the workplace, elections, religious freedom, and more.

We are thrilled to share with you some of the bills and resolutions we are currently monitoring. Take a moment to check them out below and stay informed.

Until next week, stay engaged, work collaboratively, and walk powerfully in your purpose!

Your friend in battle,
Destiny Drake West
